J1 Accommodation and Employment Advice:
With the changed regulations of the J1 program it’s important to begin searching for your summer employment in advance to secure your place in the program. Securing a seasonal job on the other side of the world, months ahead of your arrival is not an easy task but those who are most innovative and dedicate the most time to the job hunting process, will get results. We will also accept your resume and add them to a database that local employers we have worked with over the years can access but we get up to a thousand pre arrival queries from J1’s each summer so the numbers of resumes we receive far outweigh the number of employers who will come directly to us to source students. If you would like to submit a resume, submit it in both Word & PDF form. No more than one page long, no leaving cert results, focus on your work experience, particularly seasonal work in hospitality retail, etc. Do NOT include hobbies, reading, running, travelling, football, etc instead include Skills and Achievements, e.g First Aid certified, fluent spanish, computer programing, captained sports team to success, young entrepreneur of the year, etc, etc.
Similarly, students who arrive in the US early are definitely at an advantage in terms of securing accommodation. It is always difficult to secure summer long accommodation until you arrive here in person and over the years, many students have been caught out by accommodation scams.
If you have any concerns at all, please contact us to check out your proposed accommodation. We strongly advise not to exchange any money for accommodation prior to arrival, unless dealing with a reputable apartment complex. There are many great hostels available to stay at in San Diego while finding more permanent locations and we are happy to advise.
